Police
Our police department has received complaints from residents who
believe they are about to be scammed. Residents are receiving
letters at their homes addressed directly to them and postmarked
in Canada. The letters tell them they have won a lottery
sweepstakes. To make everything appear legitimate, the resident
also receives a check made out directly to them for a large sum
of money, usually $4,000 or more and advising that this
money has been deducted from their winnings, which could be in
the millions. They are instructed not to cash the check
until calling a provided phone number. After making the
call the person is instructed to wire a money gram or Western
Union money order to pay for "taxes." This is a scam.
